Self-Accountability Empowers You to Success…

Leading a productive life, demands that you respect and care for yourself enough to know that you deserve to live in a healthy, slim, fit, feel-good body. It means being self-accountable.

Self-accountability…what is it and why do we need it?

The standard definition of self-accountability is:

“An obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions. The state of being accountable, liable, or answerable.”

Self-accountability is the cornerstone of success and productivity in every aspect of life. It means holding yourself responsible for your own personal successes and failures. It is the missing link to making new lifestyle changes. Unfortunately, you’ll find no references to it in mainstream diets, exercise plans or programs, yet, without it, you’ll never reach any of your health/fitness/weight-loss goals and desires.

Although most people find it easy to feel a sense of accountability towards their spouse, friends, family, co-workers, boss, clients, customers and society in general, they find it is far more difficult to hold themselves accountable. However, if you are on a mission of becoming healthier, slimmer, fitter or stronger, that’s the one thing that really matters, the “juice that gets the battery flowing.”

Having strong core values makes it easier to plot our course and propel ourselves forward along it. Making tough decisions, and focusing on important issues becomes easier while ignoring the things that are not.

Being Mindful

Those who embrace self-accountability are aware and mindful of their emotional state. No longer are fear or guilt driving forces. They are instead, driven by a high level of self-worth, self-respect and self-love. Those are things that lead to higher levels of self-care…not the destructive negative thoughts and emotions.

Self-accountability is empowering and not something to be feared. It simply means you are in charge of your life…you are your own boss and coach.

In order to get to a healthier weight or just get healthier in general requires lifestyle changes that are permanent…ones you keep for the rest of your life. It’s not a single event, nor a one time decision, or a temporary “fix.”  It is a dynamic process of self-reflection, and constantly re-adjusting a plan because your changes also shift and change over time as you go through decades of living.

Do not attempt making giant changes that are too hard to implement. That will only sink you before you begin. Start small and see what can be accomplished through gradual but consistent lifestyle changes.

The key is to find balance. If you beat yourself up too much, you’ll drive yourself into unease, anxiety, stress and depression. On the other hand, if you do not hold yourself accountable enough, you can drive yourself in the opposite direction towards apathy, lethargy and laziness.

Everyday is a new day to start over with your health and fitness goals. Treat it as such and use affirmations to keep your head on straight. A good one to remember and use is this:

“Today is another day to do the things I did not do the day before.”
