As we grow older some critical changes are happening inside our body. We often blame these changes on the aging process but really this just means that we have been around longer so the changes have had longer to manifest themselves and longer to do damage.
Things like high blood pressure, the weakening of muscles and bones, overall decline in metabolism and our body’s continuing inability to efficiently control our blood sugar (glucose) levels are all conditions caused by lack of use. If you happen to be older the cause is still the same it has just means the body has just had longer to go unused.
One of the most devastating changes is creeping blood sugar intolerance and like the other conditions mentioned it displays no symptoms and can be present for many years (even decades) setting the stage for fatal consequences.
Although you do not die from having diabetes high levels of blood sugar can cause massive damage to blood vessels and organs and this is what you die from – the increased risk of heart disease and many others such as kidney disease. Damage is done to sensitive tissues like the kidneys, eyes and the brain and this is why diabetes and the fore-runner to it – pre-diabetes is so very dangerous. A hidden killer.
Yet the things that cause this condition are things that you can control:
• Changes in body composition (muscle/fat ratio) as muscle is lost and body fat is increased through lack of physical activity
• A mainly processed diet high in refined sugars and fats
The wrong type of food and too much of it together with a lack of exertion of our muscles are the culprit here yet the solution is so simple – health orientated strength training exercise. If muscles are directly exercised to fatigue and diet improved with the removal of the processed non-nutrient foods the problem can be bought and kept under control.
Diabetes is a disease that starts in the muscle cell as this is where fuel (the food we eat) is burned for energy. If our muscles are allowed to become flabby and weak their energy requirements become low and sugar from the blood is not being burnt up. When this sugar hangs around in the blood stream with nowhere to go it gets in places it shouldn’t and this is when it causes the damages to cells, tissues and organs.
Strength Training and Metabolism
Proper strength training exercise rehabilitates the metabolic activity within the muscle cells and has a positive healthy effect on our metabolism (our body’s engine) and increases the rate we burn fuel. It will also increase the insulin sensitivity of muscles (so less is needed to ‘push’ the glucose into the muscle cells), improves glucose tolerance and reduces body fat levels.
In other words, a properly exercised body not only improves our body’s appearance, it also improves health and lowers the risk of diseases like diabetes that can take 15-20 or more years from your life-span. Just 2-3 sessions are needed each week but you will need to put some effort into them if results are to be had.
The human body is a ‘use it’ or ‘lose it’ machine. Use it properly as it has been designed, keep its muscular system strong, fuel it with natural unprocessed foods and you can control one of the most important aspects of vital great health.
High blood glucose together with high insulin level are the most significant threat to the length and quality of your life but to keep them under control you will need to be an active participant. This means getting to the gym for some proper exercise and back into the kitchen for some nutritious home cooked food.
